The history of Lock in China
When primitive people lived a cave life, in order to be safe, they sometimes pushed boulders to block the entrance of the cave and guarded against the beasts. Then after the emergence of private ownership, thieves appeared, and locks were born. In China, locks appeared more than 3000 years ago. However, the earliest lock did not have a mechanism. It was only made in the shape of a tiger and other vicious animals to scare away the thief, so we can only say that it was a symbolic lock. According to historical records, Lu Ban was the first person to put a mechanism on the lock. Based on the analyse of unearthed cultural relics, the ancient locks were operated by the elastic force of two plate springs. Until now, this kind of spring is still in use
The history of Lock in foreign countries
In foreign countries, although the ancient Greeks had invented a very reliable lock, but because of the key too very large to use, it is difficult to popularize in ordinary families. The ancient Indians made another kind of bird-shaped magic lock, with the keyhole hidden in the wings that could shake. The rise of modern locks was first invented by the British in the 18th century. Our widely used bullet lock was invented in 1860 by Yale, Jr.
The appearence of the Key
The invention of the key was later than the lock. The ancient Egyptians were the first to use the key in the world. their lock is to insert a wooden door bolt into a slot with a wooden bolt at the top of the groove. After the bolt is inserted into the groove, the wooden bolt will be inserted into the hole of the bolt. In this way, the bolt is strong and must be opened with a key.
Because the Egyptian lock can only be used on the side with a bolt, which is not conducive to flexible opening and closing, so the Greeks developed a lock that can be opened from the other side. The key made by the Greeks was a curved wooden stick, similar in shape and size to a farmer’s scythe. But there are also some keys that are 3 feet long and have to be carried on your shoulders to move them. They are quite heavy.
The Romans can be said to be the most ingenious locksmiths in ancient times. They have studied the standard of making keys and have learned to cut the nails at the end of keys into various shapes.
